Armstrong

Armstrong, a town set within the municipality of Spallumcheen, surrounded by rural farmland, offers visitors and residents a host of recreational choices.

Within Armstrong itself is a golf course, outdoor swimming pool, skateboard park, tennis courts and baseball diamonds. There's a hockey arena, curling rink, churches of all major denominations, numerous clubs & associations and various heritage attractions.

Spallumcheen also boasts a golf course, hiking trails, numerous B&Bs, and a spot for canoeing, birding, cycling, or kayaking.  In October there is the annual ploughing match, with competition by both horses and tractors.

Armstrong and Spallumcheen are home to a wide variety of clubs to suit many tastes: horseback riding, quilting, gardening, reading, 4-H, Toastmasters and more.  The community also has a Museum and Art Gallery and is home to the well-known Historic O'Keefe Ranch, Caravan Farm Theatre, and Asparagus Community Theatre. We are home to the largest Agricultural Fair "The Interior Provincial Exhibition" If buying fresh farm produce can be regarded as "recreation" then the weekly Farmers Market held from April to October is an event to visit; find it at the IPE fairgrounds. In addition, individual growers often sell their produce right from their farms.

Prior to the incorporation of Spallumcheen and Armstrong, the village of Lansdowne was located on the bench above the valley where Armstrong is now located. In 1891, the route for the Shuswap and Okanagan railway bypassed the village and so by 1892, many of the buildings from Lansdowne, including the Anglican Church, moved to the community of Armstrong. As a consequence, the village of Lansdowne disappeared.

After the Township of Spallumcheen was incorporated in 1892, the council of the day felt that in order to encourage the growth of the business community in Armstrong, without compromising agriculture and farming, that two municipalities should be formed. As a result, the City of Armstrong was incorporated in 1913. For over 100 years, these warm and vibrant communities have offered a myriad of activities and attractions for visitors and locals alike to enjoy and explore.
